Letter to the Editor
Alum defends columnist

I would like to defend Mark Myers in his criticism of The Nittwits in his column "Student section lacking energy," (Jan. 25). As a recent graduate of Penn State and diehard basketball fan, my friends and I went to every single home game during my four years at Penn State. We chose not to become part of the Nittwits, mainly because they were asking for money to join their club. Secondly, we didn't want to associate ourselves with them. My friends and I would arrive at the games as soon as the doors opened just to get the front row, to be the closest we could so we could harass the other team. This was never a problem, until the Nittwits sectioned all of the front rows for their group, only to have most of them meander in usually after tip-off. They were mostly emotionless, relying on their small group effort of wearing coordinating shirts to show their "spirit." And not to take the spotlight away from her win, "Miss Bracket" won basically because, let's face it, Penn State is a nationally recognizable name, and frequent visitors to ESPN.com will choose to vote for a school based solely on their name. If she is naive enough to think that people of the country all believe that a little make-up and a wig make her the best fan, well, I hope it helps her sleep at night.
