It's not often you see a man juggling three machetes. It's likely even less often that you see a man juggling three machetes while standing on the shoulders of a barefoot man standing on shards of broken glass.
It's almost definitely less often that you see all this while Penn State President Graham Spanier assists in a magician's coat.
But that's what the crowd at the State Theatre saw in the grand finale of The Adult Circus -- which is not exactly what it sounds like.
The show featured the slick sleight-of-hand of Chris Chelko and masterful juggling and mind-reading of Michael DuBois, both of whom are former Penn State students. Aside from the intense finale, the show featured humorous stunts and its fair share of audience interaction.
Just before juggling the machetes atop Chelko's shoulders, DuBois pulled off a mesmerizing trick when he escaped from a secured straitjacket. As if that weren't impressive enough, he did it while balancing himself on a six-foot-tall unicycle thanks to the assistance of two men from the audience, one of whom was Penn State spokesman Bill Mahon.
Spanier kicked off the show, having no problem entertaining the crowd with card tricks and the help of audience members, including Mike "The Mailman" Herr. For one trick, he attempted to borrow a dollar from a member of the crowd. Alas, Gov. Ed Rendell was not in attendance. After finally getting a boy to volunteer, he magically transfigured the dollar into a paper that said "I owe you one dollar. Signed, Graham Spanier."
You and me both, kid.
Spanier did, however, make good on his agreement when the dollar reappeared inside a lemon.
