Ice Lions win two despite struggle

Collegian Staff Writer

In the last three months, the ACHA Division II Penn State Ice Lions have shown their ability to win any type of game, no matter the team or situation. This weekend's games were a great example.

Penn State continued its hot streak with a 1-0 shutout victory at home against the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday. The win came 24 hours after the Ice Lions (15-2-1, 10-3-1) won a thrilling overtime game at Siena, 2-1, on a goal by defenseman Drew Ward.

Although Penn State was able to produce 53 shots on goal against Penn, the only goal came from freshman Von Mondevergine, his first career goal.

Sophomore goaltender Andrew Golin, starting in place of senior Dan Koletsky, stopping all 10 shots Penn threw at him for the win.

Although the team will take the win, neither the players nor head coach Pat Fung was happy with the team's effort Saturday night.

"We didn't play inspired," Fung said. "We didn't really make any mistakes. We weren't as up for the game as we were against Siena."

The Ice Lions also recognized their uninspired play against Penn.

"We were definitely not happy," junior defenseman Tony Rossi said. "We came into the game thinking we would kill them. We didn't play with urgency."

Fung said that the team spent Friday night in Albany after the Siena game, and then got lost coming back to State College. That might've played a factor in the team's play Saturday. He also said that it is hard for players to come out with the same intensity for every game.

Rossi echoed some of the same sentiments.

"We usually play down to the teams that we play," he said.

One positive from Saturday was the play of Golin. With the shutout Saturday he has yet to allow a goal in his Ice Lions career. It bodes well for Golin, who along with freshman Tim Howland, and sophomore Jeff Kristan, will probably battle for the starting spot in net next season.

"I'm very impressed with Drew," he said. "It's hard to stay awake when there are only 10 shots in a game."

It also bodes well for Fung who has options if for some reason he can't lean on reliable starter Dan Koletsky. And despite the setback, neither Rossi nor Fung said that last weekend will linger for the Ice Lions, who have higher goals in mind. Fung warned that the team can only reach that goal if it's ready for every game from here on out.

"Mental preparation shouldn't be a problem for us," he said.

"If it is, then we have underachieved."
