New Starbucks a brewin'

A new Starbucks branch will be opening in Centre Court on Garner Street in the near future, Associated Realty representative Joe Spangler said.

The date of the new store's opening is still unknown, Spangler said.

"The space [in Centre Court] is still completely unfinished. We have to finalize the construction end of the deal first," he said.

Out with the old, in with the new
Insomnia Cookies, a late-night cookie delivery service, will be opening at 129 S. Fraser St. Feb. 8. The store will be open daily from 8 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. The store offers combinations of cookies, brownies, ice cream and beverages, including milk. The store offers six basic cookie varieties — chocolate chunk, double chocolate chunk, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, sugar and M&M, CEO Seth Berkowitz said.

A new hair salon, Viva Bella, 232B W. College Ave., will open Thursday and offer professional haircuts, formal updos, highlighting services, perms and waxing services. Services will be available six days a week, as the salon is closed on Mondays. They are open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Haircuts will start at $25, highlighting at $50, and waxing services at $10.

Ben and Jerry's will be closing its State College store in the near future because "the owners are selling the entire building," according to a corporate representative. Store manager Dan Havrilla confirmed that the local ice cream shop, 124 S. Allen St., will close. He would not comment on when the store will be closing its doors or what will take its place.

The new location for the coffee shop will be the third Starbucks in the State College area.

One is located at 232 W. College Ave., and the corporation's other area location is at 2030 N. Atherton St.

Ned Liggett, of Centre Region Code Administration, said a permit has not yet been issued for a new store, but he said he has been in contact with an architect who was hired to create design plans for the coffee chain.

"They're definitely coming," said Herman Slaybaugh, State College Borough zoning officer.

Some Penn State students said they are eager for a new location to grab coffee, study and meet with friends.

"I like the drinks and the atmosphere," Jen Noel (freshman-public relations) said. Since Noel lives in Pollock Halls, she said the new location will be more convenient for her.

Schweta Arakali (sophomore-premedicine) said she agreed.

"I will probably just go [to the new Centre Court location] because it's closer. [The West College Avenue Starbucks] is out of the way for me," she said.

A representative of Starbucks Coffee Store could not be reached by press time yesterday.

Centre Court opened in August and holds student apartments on the upper floors and ground floor space for stores and restaurants to rent out.
