A burglary early yesterday morning at The Graduate apartment complex is "not connected whatsoever" to a home invasion five days earlier at Beaver Hill apartments, State College Police Sgt. Chris Fishel said today.

Tonight, students who were once encouraged to "take a look, it's in a book" can come face to face with the man who once offered that advice.

The students and colleagues of William L. Petersen, a professor of religious studies known for "ruffling the feathers of Christians," celebrated his life during a memorial service Friday evening.

Despite President Bush's proposed troop surge, officials from Penn State University Park's ROTC program said they're predicting university recruitment rates to stay stable.

For the second time in a year, the original Penn State Sub Shop was up for auction on eBay.

Soon, college students could not only be rating their professors, but their dorms and dining areas as well.

Boys donning black T-shirts and sunglasses danced to "Men in Black" Saturday night in hopes of becoming Mr. East Halls.

State College Area High School's stage was lit up with talent Friday night in an effort to help area students visit black colleges throughout the country.

First, the 3-foot, all-beef patty. Next, the giant pickle. Then a scramble for the over-sized bacon, a dash for the huge cheese, and to top it off, a mother in a full-sized bun leaped for the finish.

When freshman Sen. Bob Casey opens his regional offices across Pennsylvania, he'll be offering students something a local official says they're not used to -- a voice in Washington, D.C.

Clad in leg chains, orange jump suits and black hoods, eight protestors walked through downtown State College Saturday to protest what they say is prisoner mistreatment in the war on terrorism.

News in brief

SPORTS

Early on yesterday afternoon, things looked dire for the Penn State women's basketball team.

In the midst of a five-game losing streak, Minnesota coach Jim Molinari compared the situation to how you would feel after hours of practice, dog-tired, unable to breath, thirsty, and the roof of the gym was about to collapse on top of you.

On Saturday night, Penn State Icers defenseman Kyle Mills stepped onto the ice with a chance to be a hero.

The cheering is often reserved for Penn State following games at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. On Saturday, however, it was Duquesne making all the noise.

The senior center for the Penn State women's basketball team is in the middle of every team huddle, pulling the five together after every whistle. She doesn't pump her fists to the home crowd when a shot falls, or sulk disappointedly when a referee doesn't make a call.

The No. 12 Penn State wrestling team came out firing this weekend as No. 3 Phil Davis scored pinfalls in both of his matches and No. 12 Aaron Anspach scored two major decisions to bring the crowd in Rec Hall to its feet.

This weekend the No. 9 Penn State men's volleyball team traveled to Honolulu to take part in the Outrigger Hotels Invitational -- a tournament Penn State has enjoyed little success in with a 6-24 record there the past 13 years.

It was important for the Penn State men's and women's swimming and diving team to come away from the Shamrock Invitational on a positive note, earning momentum toward the Big Ten Championships.

Even the most casual sports fan would have been impressed by the top-notch athletes, elite competition and outstanding performances on display this weekend at the Penn State National Invitational.

Records continued to fall for the Penn State women's track and field team this weekend at the Penn State National inside the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track at the Multi-sport Facility.

Withstanding a late push from No. 24 N.C. State, the No. 19 Penn State women's gymnastics team claimed its second victory in as many weeks, defeating N.C. State, 193.850-192.625. The win also signaled the end of a three-meet homestand.

After an almost perfect finish at the Penn State invitational on Saturday, the men's and women's fencing teams are showing strong signs of becoming the national champions this season.

The Penn State women's tennis team (0-1) fell to rival Pennsylvania on Saturday with a 2-5 loss.

A 9 a.m. start time didn't affect the No. 50 Penn State men's tennis team. Even if it did, junior Michael James and sophomore Adam Slagter were the energizers.

Despite winning last week, the Penn State men's gymnastics team was not happy with its performance at Temple. This weekend, however, was markedly better.
