Boys donning black T-shirts and sunglasses danced to "Men in Black" Saturday night in hopes of becoming Mr. East Halls.
The pageant, an idea of the Stone/Snyder Hall Council, had freshmen showing off their skills in different categories such as talent, formal wear and question and answer.
"I am expecting everyone to have a really good time. The guys are extremely excited. And I think everyone else here is excited," said Melissa Sansone (freshman-advertising), a member of the Stone/Snyder Hall Council.
Justin Pagano (freshman-computer engineering), who performed the song "Zombie Nation" via Dance Dance Revolution, came away with the title of Mr. East Halls.
With his back showing to the crowd, Pagano bounced around on his DDR mat, turning whichever way the arrows pointed him.
The excited crowd behind Pagano watched as the video game scored his dancing skills.
Before taking the crown, Pagano faced stiff competition.
Travis Mount (freshman-chemical engineering), who came in second place, dressed in a full tuxedo to help showcase his talent of singing and playing the piano and harmonica to The Bill Joel song "The Piano Man."
Despite coming in second place, Mount was still excited.
"Of course I had fun. I loved performing for people; I live for this stuff," he said.
John Fisher (freshman-astronomy), who came in third place, demonstrated the "hand flute," playing crowd favorites such as the Flinestone's theme song.
During the question and answer section, Pagano suggested ways freshmen at Penn State could become involved, such as attending Icers hockey games or playing racquetball at the IM Building.
Between categories, Jimmy Bowen (freshman-journalism), who served as Master of Ceremonies, entertained the crowd with jokes.
"A lot of my friends are used to hearing my bad jokes, so I am not that nervous," Bowen said before the event. "It should be fun as long as they give me sympathy laughs."
The judges of the pageant were Shartaya Mollett (senior-human development and family studies) and Laura Norton (freshman-health policy and administration).
When asked what he would do with his new title, Pagano gave an obvious response.
"I am going to Disney World! And I am going to keep East Halls under control, whatever the students want, I represent the students," Pagano said.
