Letter to the Editor
'Pay it forward' example found in new Thon drive

Samantha Hauger's pay it forward idea from her letter ("Little acts of kindness could benefit everyone," Jan. 23) is exactly what Penn State's Student Philanthropy Council is organizing for Thon 2007.

As part of the Philanthropy Council's mission to promote the role and impact of philanthropy on campus, we have designed a "4 or More for 4 Diamonds" campaign that encourages students to donate their pennies, nickels, dimes and dollars to Thon. From Jan. 29 to 31, the Student Philanthropy Council will be asking students to drop their loose change and pledges into diamond containers marked for their class year.

The diamond containers will be located on the ground floor of the HUB-Robeson Center. If every University Park student at Penn State contributed $4 to Thon, more than $160,000 could be raised to fight pediatric cancer. Just as Ms. Hauger argued in her letter, with just a few minutes and a little bit of effort every student on this campus can make a difference.

By making a small contribution to Thon not only can we imitate Trevor's pay it forward system, we can embody the messages of courage, wisdom, honesty and strength so central to the Four Diamonds Fund.
