I was amused by Jessica Winslow's response yesterday to Kevin Doran's review of OAR's recent concert ("Collegian review of O.A.R. slammed the band's fans").
I admit, arguing musical tastes (especially in print) can be difficult, but Ms. Winslow's main argument seemed to be that Mr. Doran's writing was "bull." Why this was, I'm not sure, although she did specifically take issue with Doran's criticism of the band's saxophone player, which apparently was also "bull." The best part is that Ms. Winslow is apparently a journalism major. She would appear to have a bright future at USA Today.
I happen to agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Doran about Jerry DePizzo, being a saxophone player myself. I'm no great talent, but I enjoy listening to talented saxophonists. I can tell you this: DePizzo is easily the least imaginative soloist I have ever heard at the professional level, to say nothing of the thin, whiny tone he produces. And yes, I happen to personally know several saxophonists who were much better in high school than DePizzo is now.
The reason for Ms. Winslow's poor response is now obvious, of course -- DePizzo's supposed "talent" is simply indefensible.
