Ben and Jerry's will be closing its State College store in the near future because "the owners are selling the entire building," according to a corporate representative.
Store manager Dan Havrilla confirmed that the local ice cream shop, 124 S. Allen St., will close. He would not comment on when the store will be closing its doors or what will take its place.
A representative from the State College branch of The Apartment Store Real Estate Group said that she was unsure if the rental apartments that were located above the shop will be affected by the upcoming lease change.
She directed further questions to the corporate office, which could not be reached for comment by press time yesterday.
Keystone Real Estate Group, who is handling the leasing of the building, had no comment.
Students expressed their disappointment about the store's closing yesterday.
"Ben and Jerry's is the kind of place where, if you pass it, you have to go in," Colleen McGarry (sophomore-nursing) said. "I would definitely be upset."
Caroline Mansur (sophomore-art history and French) said she enjoys the shop because of its proximity to her workplace.
"The hot chocolate there is pretty good," Mansur said. "I definitely would miss that. Plus, Ben and Jerry's is a pretty iconic East Coast ice cream place, so I'd be sad to see it go."
Lehigh Workinger (senior-information sciences and technology) said she goes to the store whenever she wants ice cream.
"I'm upset because it's close to campus and they have such good ice cream and cakes," she said.
