O.A.R. isn't a 'jam band'
I'm not sure I completely understand Kevin Doran's piece regarding the O.A.R. performance last night. I would first like to admit two things: I enjoy O.A.R., and I wasn't at the show last night. How can Doran base a review on the band's inability to jam in a cohesive manner? I have never understood why O.A.R. is put in the category of a "jam band." By defintion, a jam is defined by playing a piece in an improvised manner. Go to the next O.A.R. concert and tell me how different these "jams" are from the show you attended. While there may be subtle differences, they certainly would not be on the scale of a true jam band such as Phish, where songs sounded entirely different from night to night. Playing your instruments without singing in an organized and consistent manner does not equate to improvisation, at least in the way I understand it. I'm not going to argue that O.A.R. writes brilliant music that should be revered with other truly era-defining tunes. However, I want to point out this flaw in Doran's arguement because I am tired of the Collegian's music critics writing uninformed pieces. While Doran may have had legitimate criticisms at times, his credibility is threatened by making statements which are inaccurate and misleading.
