Dancers show 'perceptions'

Collegian Staff Writer

Student choreographers and dancers will perform their own Multiple Perceptions this week in the inaugural Stu-
dent Choreography Showcase, which includes four dances exploring various themes.

Kaitlin Mausser (senior-theatre) said she and other choreographers composed the dances in their Fall 2005 class Dance 480 (Choreographic Projects) and each of the dances has its own unique style.

"Everything we have done in the past two years is gearing up to this final performance," she said.

Rachel Nicely (senior- education) said she has been putting her piece together since last February.

"I've been going through everything for about a year, and the piece I choreographed is very close to home for me," she said.

Mausser said some of the dances have a modern feel, however, hers is more of a theatrical piece.

"My dance is very much an emotional journey about one main character who has to confront feelings that we all feel and need to overcome," she said.

Mausser said English graduate student Margaret Okere's dance is different from her own because it has a lyrical feel and focuses around a poem, which will be read by Okere herself.

Mausser said this show is the first time she and the other choreographers have had the chance to showcase their own choreography.

"I have choreographed other shows before like Frog and Toad, but this is a chance for me to show what I study everyday in class," she said.

Mausser said Multiple Perceptions is also a great opportunity for future choreographers.

"It's not everyday you can organize the schedules of everyone involved and create an event," she said. "Hopefully students for years to come will have this opportunity. I'm excited to be in the forefront."

Maggie Ludwig (graduate-psychology) said Multiple Perceptions is a great show for those who are not familiar with the dance department.

"All of the pieces are great, and there's something for everyone," she said. "The dances are all very interpretative as well, so it would be great for someone who is unfamiliar with modern dance."

Mausser said she encourages students and community members to attend Multiple Perceptions.

"It's really important to know that there are dancers here at Penn State, and I hope people can support us as an art," she said. "There are not a lot of opportunities to witness dance as an art form and with all the work we have put into this, it is worthwhile for students to see what their peers have been able to accomplish."
