An openly lesbian former Penn State assistant professor is suing the university on the grounds of discrimination based on her gender and sexual orientation, and in retaliation for her outspoken opposition to discriminatory practices.

The Penn State Board of Trustees approved a "master plan" for the development of Penn State Harrisburg at Friday's meeting to further transform the former military base into a student-friendly campus.

Students laced up their skates Saturday to support the Interfraternity/Panhellenic Council Dance Marathon.

With less than a month left until the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, the Penn State Student Red Cross Club is out for blood.

The State College Borough is awaiting the approval of $1 million from the state legislature that is needed to cover costs for the realignment of Fraser Street and Beaver Avenue.

He was a teacher, a giver and also a proud father.

Members of the Sigma Chi fraternity, 400 E. Prospect Ave., braved the cold this weekend to formally recognize and celebrate a massive renovation of their home that began two weeks ago.

As American soldiers fight overseas, Penn State honored three of its own who recently returned from assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan at the men's basketball game on Saturday.

Although the ski season is nearly half over, Penn State skiers and snowboarders are looking forward to a solid eight more weeks of hitting the slopes, assuming that the recent cold snap continues.

Despite the crisp air, a clean-cut man takes long strides along Route 45, surrounded by a vast expanse of Centre County's shriveled cornfields and candle-lit farmhouses.

Despite a significant increase in State College's student population, some members of the State College Borough Council said they don't think more student housing is necessary downtown.

Though Penn State has received 5,700 more applications than this time last year, the university isn't planning to enroll a class as large as last fall's, Penn State President Graham Spanier said at Friday's Board of Trustees meeting.

The lawyer of a Penn State student who police said admitted to attacking three women filed a motion to ban all physical evidence and statements made by his client from the student's pending trial.

"How 'bout a revolution?" shouted the crowd along to "Crazy Game of Poker," the fan favorite at last night's O.A.R. concert at the Bryce Jordan Center.

News in brief

SPORTS

It was a building experience for the Penn State women's track and field team on Saturday at the Penn State Open at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.

The Penn State men's track and field team continued its stretch of home meets in January as it played host to the Penn State Open at Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on Saturday.

The scene in the South Gym of Rec Hall was unlike that of any regular volleyball match.

The No. 18 Penn State women's gymnastics team sent the home fans away from Rec Hall Saturday night in good spirits following a 192.900 to 191.175 upset over No. 15 Minnesota. For the team members and the coach, however, the win was not so satisfying.

If anyone was ready to feed off of a frenzied crowd, beat his chest and scream at any Michigan State player in sight during pregame introductions, it was Jamelle Cornley.

With the shot clock winding down late in the first half of Saturday's Penn State men's basketball game against Michigan State, Spartan guard Travis Walton launched a prayer from 24 feet away in an attempt to beat the buzzer.

For a moment, the Penn State women's basketball team appeared to have conquered its road ailments, and had finally put together a strong road game performance.

After its Dec. 15 meet at Rec Hall, the Penn State wrestling team prepared for a month away from home. The No. 10 Nittany Lions had a strong start to the road stint, but were unable to finish it on a positive note.

On the final home meet for the Penn State men and women's swimming and diving teams, the McCoy Natatorium was louder than usual. Maybe it was presence of powerhouse Rutgers. Or maybe it was the thunderous roar that the 10 seniors received from the crowd.

The No. 2 Penn State ACHA Division I Icers (22-4-0, 20-2-0 ACHA) returned to the Greenberg Ice Pavilion this weekend to their largest home crowd of the season against the much-maligned Pittsburgh Panthers.

In Friday night's 7-0 victory against the Pittsburgh Panthers, senior goaltender Chris Matteo grabbed his fifth win of the season. But it was sophomore goaltender Aaron Myers who grabbed the spotlight.

While the Penn State men's gymnastics team won its second straight meet to open up the 2007 season, it certainly wasn't as impressive as the week before, when it dominated No. 14 Army.
