While the Penn State men's gymnastics team won its second straight meet to open up the 2007 season, it certainly wasn't as impressive as the week before, when it dominated No. 14 Army.
No. 5 Penn State (2-0) won the Temple Invitational on Sunday against No. 12 Temple, No. 13 William & Mary and James Madison.
Penn State finished with a 210.225 score, bettering both Temple (198.600) and William & Mary (190.850).
So while the result reflected the individual team rankings, the performances did not.
"We won, but we were a little sloppy. A little lackluster," Penn State head coach Randy Jepson said. "But it was a tough environment to compete in."
After winning all of the events against Army the previous Saturday, the Nittany Lions were a little sluggish in their first road test of the season.
"I'm disappointed, especially with such a good start last week. But we'll pull it together," Jepson said. "We just didn't hit a lot of our routines -- only 19 out of 36."
Jepson said that the sub-par performance could have been contributed to the odd practice week the team went through, considering it was the first week this year that the practices went alongside with classes.
But while the overall performance was dramatically different, the Lions were once again paced by the experienced athletes. As was the case last weekend, senior captain Matt Cohen led the Lions throughout the meet.
"He was really solid all through. He hit his landings and did a nice job," Jepson said. "But everybody was not up to par."
While Jepson didn't think that the strong start against Army made his team overconfident, he did say that to avoid another disappointing performance from here on out, more attention and effort had to be made by the athletes in the practices.
"Several guys need to practice like they're competing. They need to act like the practice gym is like the competing gym," he said.
So while more of a focus will be given to the practices, the Lions will have fewer days to prepare than usual this week, as the team heads to New York to compete in the West Point open at 7 p.m. Friday.
The meet will mark the second time in the short season that the team will compete against Army and Temple.
