Reader frustrated by Thon
Having recently seen the failing grade given to New Jersey police by the Collegian for citing Thon canners and the remarks the paper made to that effect have once again proven to me that Thon, and all of the feelings it arouses, are, unfortunately, just around the corner. That wonderful time in the spring semester has come at last. It's that time when, it seems, anybody who acts or speaks against Thon is considered a blasphemous, child-hating, cancer-supporting heretic, and I have grown very weary of it, especially because the subject becomes a bit more precarious for those of us who find fault with Thon. Do not, by any means, get me wrong -- I support the cause of the Four Diamonds Fund. However, the way my fellow students carry out its message and what is carried out in the name thereof are, sometimes, quite embarrassing and often foolish. The fact that New Jersey canners were being philanthropic does not exculpate them from their law-breaking -- the police surely do not lack compassion for the cancer-stricken children, but they do have a job to carry out. I also realize that this is not a condition shared by all Thon participants, but it becomes apparently obvious every spring that the grand ultimatum is issued: "You're either for Thon or for cancer."
