James Broadhurst was elected chairman of the Penn State University Board of Trustees at today's meeting.
Broadhurst, chairman and CEO of Eat'n Park Hospitality Group, said he was honored by the opportunity to head the trustees and move up from his previous position as vice chairman of the board.
He will replace Cynthia Baldwin, the first black female chairman of the board, whose term ended today.
"You will see a lot of me," he said. "I work with very open door."
Steve Garban was elected to take Broadhurst's place as vice chair.
"I am humbled by my election," Garban said. "I am going to sit down with [Broadhurst] and see what his views are."
Discussing his Feb. 27 visit to Harrisburg to appeal for state funding, Graham Spanier, Penn State president, said the governor will release his budget recommendations for Penn State in early February.
A comprehensive study on Penn State's impact on the environment was presented by Steven Maruszewski, deputy associate vice president for Physical Plant.
He said that Penn State's energy consumption contributes to 90 percent of the university's greenhouse gas emissions.
Implementations of steam trap upgrades, the purchase of renewable resources, and the reduction of petroleum consumption through shuttles and alternative fuels were also discussed.
A campus master plan for Penn State Harrisburg was proposed, outlining expansion, demolition, and land purchase plans that may be voted and receive appropriated money at a later date.
Additions to the Computer Building and East Campus Steam Plant were also approved.
