Women preparing for first home meet

Collegian Staff Writer

After falling to Arkansas last week, the Penn State women's gymnastics team is looking for more than a win.

"Last weekend was a disappointment," co-captain Corissa Pirkl said. "After doing well at the Super Six Challenge, we got too comfortable and lost our focus against Arkansas. We worked really hard in practice this week and expect to see results."

No. 18 Penn State will serve as host to No. 15 Minnesota at 7 p.m. Saturday at Rec Hall, and coach Steve Shephard is confident that his team will benefit from a strong week of practice.

"We are a lot more ready this week than last," he said. "We are raising our expectations for the execution and consistency for all the girls."

With another home-turf advantage, the Lions hope to use the fans' presence in order to gain momentum on the way to an important home win.

"Every score and meet counts, especially at home," co-captain senior Stephanie Sullivan said. "We have much more potential than we showed last week. With our young team, a win at home would be a big morale boost."

Along with Pirkl, freshman standout Brandi Personett has been solid in opening meets and has demonstrated stability for the young team.

Before Personett claimed the title for both the all-around and the beam last weekend, Personett was also named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week after her bronze medal effort in the all-around at the Super Six Challenge. Pirkl placed sixth in the all-around at the Super Six Challenge and second against Arkansas with a season-best score.

Shephard expects both Pirkl and Personett to continue to be a strong base this weekend.

Although the team temporarily lost its step, Sullivan and Pirkl hope to concentrate and make up the ground they lost last weekend. The captains believe the team has regained confidence in their skills and are expecting to come out on top.

"We know we're in the top 10 in the country," Sullivan said. "We just have to show everyone else."
