Future of technology not decided by Blu-ray
In response to Rich Coleman's column "New technology makes every generation want to be the last" (Jan. 18), I'd have to say that I agree with most of his points. Yes, the picture is clearer, but I do not care about the bonus features, and I do not mind having a trilogy span three DVD's. I do, however, disagree that Blu-ray will be the standard. Just like the BetaMax VHS wars in the 80s, Blu-ray is going up against HD-DVD. While Blu-ray is admittedly a superior technology, HD-DVD has a broader appeal and a catchier name. The most important feature may be the fact that it is not backed by Sony, a company that has not had much success in its proprietary media formats (minidisc, memory stick and UMD come to mind). It took a long time for people to switch over to DVD's too, in fact, a large amount of people still don't have them. My plan is to wait until the wars are over. Until then, DVD's are more than enough for me. Charles Wolfe
