Activity fee supports variety of experiences
Timothy Uhrich, in response to your letter on Jan. 18 ("Reader questions reason for student activity charge"), you are not the first person to question the fee. I admit I've been out of school a few years, but I'm pretty certain that the money is being used in a similar way. It's true you have to pay a fee to join the campus gym. The fee is actually subsidized by the student activity fee. Not all students want to use the gym, so why should all of the money go there? What about students involved in other things? Should they be paying so you can go to the gym for free? During my time at Penn State the fee was used to subsidize things such as the tickets for Center for the Performing Arts, LateNight and numerous student organizations' activities, even rec sports. So if you spend every free moment you have at Penn State in the gym, maybe the fee is not working to the best of its ability. But then again, neither are you. With so many opportunities to experience new things, you are missing out. Jacqueline Zygmund
