My Opinion
BCS Bowl season helps to expose frauds

There was just something different in the BCS bowl games this year. It wasn't your typical best teams in the country facing off, but rather an awakening for most fans who believed the hype -- I'm guilty -- of the country's top five teams.

The exposing of frauds began with the Granddaddy of them All (Rose Bowl). USC and Michigan were both stripped of a chance to play for the national championship in the final game of the season, and it was popular belief that each team was ready to show that they were deserving of a title shot -- except no one told the Wolverines.

For three quarters, it looked like Michigan quarterback Chad Henne was taking a page out of Chicago Bears quarterback Rex Grossman's book and not focusing on the game.

As the offense struggled, the Wolverine defense didn't look much better, as John David Booty, Dwayne Jarrett and company lit up the secondary for 391 yards passing.

Michigan would have easily been the biggest fraud of the bowl season had Notre Dame and Ohio State not done their best job redefining what the word overrated means.

The Irish once again were unable to step up in a big game. While quarterback Brady Quinn deserves some blame, most of it rests with the over-glorified defense of the Golden Domers.

Notre Dame was never a top-five team at any point in the season, and LSU exposed them in the Sugar Bowl.

Speaking of getting exposed, Ohio State appeared to forget how to play offense during the 51 days they were off.

As I mentioned in the BCS bowls preview on Dec. 7, "In football, the passing game is all about timing, so when your quarterback hasn't played without the red jersey for almost two months, there is a chance he will get a case of happy feet."

And that is exactly what happened to Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.

The speed of Florida's defense overwhelmed him at times, and he looked like the quarterback that was scrabbling around in the game against Penn State in 2005.

Even with the tremendous showing the Gators, and how every other bowl turned out, I still believe that a playoff system would have yielded a different national champion: the LSU Tigers.

But instead of talking about the bowl season, why don't I give out awards?

Best Dressed Award

Anyone who actually sat through the terrible Fox post-game show -- where's Keith Jackson when you need him? -- after the BCS National Championship game, witnessed something strange.

After going break, Fox returned to interview Florida coach Urban Meyer, who had just put on a leather coat that had "2006 National Champions" embroidered on the jacket.

Now, I don't know if that is a sign of confidence or arrogance, but the idea that Meyer thought prior to the game that he would spend the money to have jacket made with no guarantees, shows his players what he thought of their chances.

Best Moment

This definitely goes to Boston College kicker Steve Aponavicius, and his 37-yard game-winning field goal. Aponavicius, a walk-on, sat in the Eagles student section last season, and had never really played football before joining Boston College.

But there he was kicking a game-winning field goal in a bowl game. It's just another one of those one-in-a-million stories.

Worst Moment

This goes to the post-game interview of Boise State's Ian Johnson -- thanks again, Fox -- and one of the worst moments in live television history.

Chris Myers -- thankfully, no relation -- was interviewing Johnson after he had just won the Fiesta Bowl, and after the interview concluded, Myers turned to Johnson and said:

"I know your going to propose to your girlfriend, congratulations."

Thankfully, Johnson's girlfriend said yes. So, remind me never to tell Chris Myers a secret.
