Charges not appropriate consequence for students
This letter is in response to the letter "Charging 17 for furnishing an unneeded punishment," (Dec. 15). I agree with you, other than the fact I don't get a kick out of the Chicken Man and think it's dumb. I agree that these individuals should not be charged with anything. No one can force you to make a choice to drink. If you are over 18 and decide to drink at a party, it is your own fault what the consequences are, not the five people who chipped in and bought the booze to have a good time with their friends. The enforcement of this law does nothing good, it only adds to the situation and it is unnecessary. You make a decision to drink, live with it. I would never blame the person who bought me booze when I was younger if I got drunk and made a mistake. It wouldn't even cross my mind, and from what it sounds like, the underage students simply went party hopping. I believe one of them went to three parties in the same building. It's unfair to charge the residents with a crime. Be accountable. Brendan Stenson
