My Opinion
Valentine's Day trumps year's resolutions

Valen-tine's Day? Puh-leeze. I'm renaming this holiday. From now on, Feb. 14 will be known as Break Your New Year's Resolution Day!

As the ball drops, millions of Americans pledge to better themselves in the coming year. Little do they know that the holiday looming six weeks later was manufactured to break their vows.

If you haven't broken your New Year's resolution by now, consider V-day to be D-day. Most people probably don't keep their resolutions beyond the first few days of January, but for the determined few that are still going strong, forget it.

Beware! Cupid preys on both the romantically involved and the solitary unattached. Below, I have listed the five most popular New Year's resolutions and the strategies used to break them.

"Spend more time with family and friends." Valentine's Day is the antithesis of numero uno. Who are you supposed to spend Feb. 14 with? Your sweetie, of course.

And if you don't have a sweetie, you may be spending this depressing day sulking alone in your room.

"Lose weight." This is the one that prompted me to re-name Feb. 14. Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to eat chocolate - and lots of it.

If your significant other gives you a giant box of chocolates, you're going to eat it.

And if you don't have a significant other, you'll probably buy yourself an even bigger box of chocolates, eat the whole thing and wash it down with a glass of self-pity.

"Get in shape." I don't know about you, but my idea of the perfect date does not include a three-mile jog followed by a 20-minute Pilates workout. It's hard to be romantic when you have body odor.

"Enjoy life more." It's hard to enjoy a holiday designed solely for those in love if you're not. And if you are in love, you're probably stressing over finding the perfect gift for your sweetheart.

"Get out of debt." Seeing how this is a holiday practically invented by Hallmark, this is a definite bust. Commercialism thrives in the days leading up to Feb. 14.

If you have kept your New Year's resolution thus far, congratulations! But I'm warning you, your biggest challenge is yet to come. Valentine's Day is a test of will-power camouflaged in pink hearts and red roses.
