On Sunday, the No. 10 Nittany Lions fell short in their bid to defeat Edinboro in the finals of the Virginia Duals.
Penn State and No. 12 Edinboro split the dual with each team winning five bouts. However, because of Edinboro's advantage in bonus points, the Fighting Scots came away with the 19-17 upset victory.
While Penn State managed just two bonus points in the dual, Edinboro accumulated a total of four to seal the victory.
No. 2 Mark McKnight opened the dual for the Lions at 125, scoring a decision over Edinboro's Eric Morrill, which put Penn State up 3-0.
"McKnight has been doing a tremendous job," Penn State wrestling coach Troy Sunderland said. "He's been doing just a tremendous job on the things he needs to do to become a national champion."
The Lions took a 7-0 lead over the Fighting Scots, gaining four points in the dual with a major decision from No. 6 Jake Strayer at 133.
Edinboro would come back to tie it, however, scoring seven points in the next two matches in the 141- and 149-pound weight classes.
After adding another nine points from a pinfall at 157-pounds and a decision at 165-pounds, the Fighting Scots went up 16-7.
The Lions would take three of the next four matches, with No. 6 James Yonushonis, No. 5 Phil Davis and No. 13 Aaron Anspach all posting wins, but would be unable to make up the deficit.
"We were kind of on a wrestling high after shutting out Rider [earlier in the day]," Sunderland said. "Basically, we didn't come back with the same intensity. We knew Edinboro was a good team. We saw that at the Pennsylvania Duals. But, what really won the match for them was the bonus points."
The Lions shutout Rider in the semifinals by a score of 41-0. During the dual match, Penn State managed to score three technical falls and two major decisions.
On Saturday, the Lions opened the Virginia Duals by winning 39-3 against North Dakota State, and 22-9 in the quarterfinals against Bloomsburg.
Though it was not the result the team wanted, Sunderland said the experience gained from the dual meet would help the team as it approaches a tough stretch in its schedule.
Penn State will enter the heart of its Big Ten season on Friday when it travels to Madison to take on No. 17 Wisconsin.
"We got a lot of young guys in there; we told the guys it's a new season," Sunderland said. "Now is the time of the season where you have to do everything right. You talk about it all season long, about what you do in the summer and offseason. Well, now is the time where everyone remembers what you do."
Notes: Penn State defeated No. 13 Cornell, 18-12, in a dual match at Cornell. The Lions got wins from McKnight, Heller, Yonushonis, Ward, Davis and Anspach. ... Yonushonis finished fourth at the Midlands Tournament at Northwestern.
