The Penn State women's track and field team opened up its 2007 indoor season by serving as host for the Penn State Relays at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
The Nittany Lions had a record-setting performance from their sprint medley relay team. Lauren Burns started the race with a time of 24.9 seconds in the 200-meters, and Lena Bettis ran a 25.6 in the next 200-meters. Aleesha Barber extended the Lions lead in the 400-meter leg by running a 55.48. Briene Simmons finished strong, posting a time of two minutes, 5.94 seconds in the 800-meter anchor leg. The relay team took first with a time of 3:52.25, and in the process it set meet, school and facility records besting their own 3:56.63 record set in 2004.
The Lions also set a meet record in distance medley relay. The team of Bridget Franek (1,200-meters), Kim Markel (400-meters), Megan Hutchinson (800-meters) and Leah Rosenfield (1,600-meters) combined to run an 11:51.52 to set the new meet record.
Penn State was able to take the top three spots in the triple jump. Bettis took first with a leap of 39 feet-1.75 inches. Kara Dickman's jump of 38-7.5 slotted her as the runner-up. Christina Sgriccia took third place with a 37-6.75.
For the second straight year, Bettis earned top honors in the long jump with a leap of 18-10.5 . Dickman finished third with a mark of 17-10.75.
Jacqueline Meissner's leap of 11-5.75 was good enough to take home first in the pole vault.
Also in the field, Amber Strouse's leap of 5-5 in the high jump gave her a second place finish.
In the 4x200 relay, the time of 1:39.30 by Barber, Burns, Markel and Walker earned them first place.
