Spikes open doors to help local charity

Local businesses said the sting from students heading home for the holidays won't affect the season's earnings dramatically.

Starting with an accelerated campaigning process punctuated by controversial statements and disqualification, the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) has advanced from unstamped fliers to writing bylaws and "getting its act together," its president said.

Moving time has come for the students of Runkle Hall as the university prepares to renovate the current double rooms into suites; however, there are mixed emotions over the transition.

Redesigned wheelchairs, petri-dish packaging and new workplace layouts have been all in a semester's work for Penn State senior engineering students.

Ski clubs are rescheduling trips, snow-dependent events are being canceled and families are calling off vacations. This year's unusually warm weather is affecting winter activities everywhere.

Despite recent revisions, Penn State's policies still restrict freedom of speech, according to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE).

White limousines, complimentary champagne and State College elite dressed to the nines were plentiful last night at the Grand Opening of the State Theatre, demonstrating how far the building has come from its humble roots.

A blue and white paint job. An 8-track player and shag carpeting in the cockpit. Couches and an optional disco ball in the rear.

Penn State junior Anthony Cicerchia died in a fatal car accident early Saturday when he lost control of his Jeep and ran into a tree off Route 93, Columbia State police said.

More police specifically targeting underage drinking, furnishing to minors and driving under the influence will be patrolling starting tonight, officials said at a press conference yesterday.

Those heading down to Tampa for the Outback Bowl are entering a new territory with new policies.

Before the Outback Bowl game starts New Year's Day, what will students be doing with all that free time in Tampa?

With .06 seconds remaining, Southeastern Louisiana guard Daryl Cohen hit a 3-pointer that scraped off the top of the backboard to beat Penn State (7-4), 69-66. Updated Saturday 7:42 p.m.

The No. 2 Penn State ACHA Division I Icers avoided the pitfalls and closed the semester with a hard-fought, 3-2 win against Niagara University last night at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. Updated Saturday 10:12 a.m.

Down two captains and coming off a loss to No. 3 Hofstra last weekend, the No. 8 Nittany Lions were looking to make a statement against Lock Haven at Rec Hall last night, but instead wound up holding their breath until the end. Updated Friday 10:51 p.m.

Game footage of an upcoming opponent is a priceless luxury that makes any coach's job easier.

For most of this season, the Penn State men's basketball team has not been able to finish games with much breathing room.

The message could not have been clearer. After a 24-10 loss to No. 3 Hofstra last weekend, the No. 8 Penn State wrestling team knew it had to be coming.

After suffering a solid 65-48 defeat at Mississippi last Sunday, the Penn State women's basketball team is probably not too thrilled to see another away game listed next on the schedule.

Penn State coach Ed DeChellis admits three was not the number of losses the men's basketball team planned to have as it begins the final stretch of the non-conference season.

Penn State All-America linebacker Dan Connor said yesterday he is uncertain whether he will return to Penn State for his senior year or forgo his final year of eligibility to enter the NFL Draft in April.

Though their collegiate careers are intertwined, Erik Ainge and Robert Meachem grew up with divergent interests and experiences.

For Penn State players and coaches alike, there's a balance between the distracting and the relaxing at the Outback Bowl. Some enjoy the mandatory team activities; some tend to avoid the optional ones.

Levi Brown stuck his hands in his pockets and paused for what seemed like an eternity while trying to pinpoint this season's defining moment.

Seeing The Holiday was like taking a bite of chocolate and discovering a delicious peanut butter center or like opening a birthday card and having a $50 check fall out. I went in expecting something good and got something fabulous instead.

You might want to think again before buying an expensive diamond ring or jeweled necklace -- At least, that seems to be the overall message in Blood Diamond.

Many year-end lists of entertainment scandals have Mel Gibson near the top. The scandal is in reference to an anti-Semitic tirade that police said Gibson went on after he was pulled over for driving under the influence in California this past July.

I honestly thought Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" was the kind of unstoppable monster seen once a generation. A song that ridiculous should never have left Ms. Stefani's head, let alone hit No. 1. "We fell for it once, but never again," I said. Then came Fergie's carbon-copy "London Bridge." "But," I foolishly thought, "at least we're safe from anything worse, right?"

It's been said State College has a football problem, but tomorrow night at the Tall Shiva Hookah Lounge, 224 W. College Ave., Roustabout! will show this town has a chronic rock-'n'-roll problem.
