Hoyas another tough road foe
Rene Portland's Lady Lions have struggled away from the Bryce Jordan Center this season.

After suffering a solid 65-48 defeat at Mississippi last Sunday, the Penn State women's basketball team is probably not too thrilled to see another away game listed next on the schedule.

While boasting an undefeated home record, the Lady Lions have a dismal 1-6 record on the road.

As Penn State (6-6) travels to Washington, D.C. to face Georgetown (8-2) this Sunday at 3 p.m., the Lady Lions will try to win their first road game since the season opener against Drexel. Penn State is 1-1 all-time against Georgetown, losing the most recent contest in the 1993 NCAA tournament.

Georgetown is perhaps the ideal game to close out the Lady Lions' non-conference season. The Hoyas will give Penn State a variety of looks on defense, changing the types of zones they play. For a struggling offense only managing 63.2 points per game, the Lady Lions will get a chance to iron out mistakes.

"We're gonna see a lot of things we've already experienced with the teams that we played," assistant coach Annie Troyan said. "This has been a good week to correct some of the things [from before] because we're gonna see it again on Sunday all in one game."

Troyan, who also scouts opposing teams for the Lady Lions, said Georgetown features a very balanced offensive attack. Junior forward Kieraah Marlow leads the Hoyas in scoring with 16.2 points per game, followed by senior guard Kate Carlin who leads Georgetown's three-point attack with 9.4 points per game.

Georgetown head coach Terri Williams-Flournoy will be see a familiar team on the opposing sidelines. Williams-Flournoy played for the Lady Lions from 1988-91 and is facing the Lady Lions for the first time in her three seasons as head coach for the Hoyas.

After the contest with Georgetown on Sunday, Penn State will begin Big Ten play. Currently sitting at the bottom of the Big Ten standings, the Lady Lions will open the conference schedule with two road games, against Illinois on Dec. 28 and Purdue on Dec. 31. Not long afterwards, No. 8 Ohio State will come to Happy Valley on Jan. 11.

"The league overall is playing extremely well at this time," Troyan said.

"That's what we've been talking to the kids about, what this non-conference schedule will do for us. We've seen a lot of different defenses, a lot of different offenses, a lot of different styles of play, and that's what you want to do in your non-conference schedule to prepare you for everything you may see in the Big Ten. We gave ourselves a good view of a lot of different variety in that respect."

Also with the coming of the Big Ten season will be a chance for the team to get more practice time between games. Rather than playing four games in seven days at the Lady Lions did to open their season, the schedule will slow down a bit as they play only seven games over the next month.

"When we were playing a game then you had one day then another game, it was hard to get them in the gym," Troyan said. "Some of the things got put by the wayside, like individual workouts. Now we're getting back on track with the simple fundamental things, and you can start to see the kids' confidence come up again. They're starting to correct the little things so we've been able to correct a lot of that this week already."
