Roustabout! to be 'Spintoriffic'

Collegian Staff Writer

It's been said State College has a football problem, but tomorrow night at the Tall Shiva Hookah Lounge, 224 W. College Ave., Roustabout! will show this town has a chronic rock-'n'-roll problem.

The lounge will host a special, all-ages "Spintoriffic" Roustabout! featuring the Spinto Band, Okay Paddy and the Bullet Parade tonight at 9.

The Spinto Band has experienced some big changes during the past year. After releasing its album Nice and Nicely Done last year, it had some success on the UK charts with singles "Did I Tell You" and "Oh Mandy." The Wilmington, Del., natives also opened for indie-rockers the Arctic Monkeys in the spring and Art Brut in the fall.

"We kind of just got thrown in, not really knowing what we were doing," Eaton said. "And when you're on tour with a band, you see what works and what doesn't work. It's hard just to make a buck because it's fairly expensive to be touring. You get tips from the merch table all the way to the sound board and the show contract."

Beyond its success in the UK and its bigger tours, The Spinto Band has also earned airplay on MTV2's underground rock show Subterranean.

Although Nick Krill, guitarist for the band, said he hasn't seen the video on TV because he doesn't have cable, he said the wider exposure is encouraging.

"It's awesome just sharing the music," Krill said. "It's just more opportunity to share with people."

Joining the Spinto Band at the show will be Scranton power-pop band Okay Paddy. The band will be showcasing new material that it plans to include on an upcoming EP, the band's Mike Quinn said.

"We've been recording. Nick from Spinto Band's been helping us," Quinn said. "We're hoping to have that finished in a few weeks. We'll have that out early next year."

Quinn said the band prefers playing the new material so it can keep its live show fresh.

"We're trying to keep moving," he said. "If you're up there performing and you're actually into what you're doing, it's fresh and exciting. I think it's just a better experience for everybody."

The Spinto Band will also feature newer material before taking a break from touring, Krill said.

"We have a bunch of new songs we've been playing live," he said. "Some of them for almost a year, some for a couple months. We're pretty much done touring for a little while. We're playing these shows this weekend, then a couple more in February and March."

Eaton said after the holiday break, the band would be back in the record-making process again.

"This Christmas we're just kind of enjoying the holiday vacation," he said. "With the New Year, we're going to start writing songs and recording demos. We've been playing three or four U.S. tours just to promote this one album."

All the promotion has paid off, as the Spinto Band continues its rise from Roustabout! regular to internationally renowned rock band.
