NEWS

A survey from an independent research firm estimated a 9 percent increase in national spending this holiday season, and State College-area stores are preparing for the extra shoppers.

Hang a shining star upon the lowest bough -- the world of Christmas trees is being flipped upside-down.

Colleges and universities, including Penn State, are employing a smaller number of tenured professors, according to a report released Monday by the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

Hanukkah begins this Friday evening and some observant students say they will welcome the break from studying for finals.

Penn State ranks second nationwide in the number of students applying for Teach for America, which is an organization geared toward recruiting student leaders to teach in both low-income urban and rural public schools, according to statistics that were released Monday.

The percentage of new students making friends and interacting with faculty members has declined for the second year in a row, according to a Penn State Pulse survey released Friday.

Charlie Brown and his Christmas tree may seem like part of the old-fashioned holiday season, but college students are helping to revive these classic traditions by cutting down their own trees, according to the National Christmas Tree Association (NCTA).

"It's just hair," Ashley Palko said, giggling.

Penn State student David W. Cassada was released from prison yesterday to be placed under the supervision of his parents and to seek mental health treatment at a Pittsburgh hospital.

Charges are pending against 11 Penn State students police said furnished alcohol to a freshman before he was hit by a car Dec. 2.

News in brief

SPORTS

Monday was a day the Penn State men's basketball team had been anticipating.

For the Penn State men's volleyball team, the 2006 season saw the Nittany Lions go 21-9 and make a run through the Final Four before eventually falling to UCLA in the national championship.

A person cannot fit much in a single bag. Maybe that's why when Penn State defensive lineman Ed Johnson made an unexpected return home to Detroit last year, he didn't have much room for doubt.

For Penn State men's tennis players Brendan Lynch and Michael James, this fall has been a work in progress with some success. Both will look to build on their success once the spring season rolls around.

The postseason awards keep piling up for senior Penn State linebacker Paul Posluszny.

Sean Fitz is a 6-foot-4 fifth-year senior at Penn State. And with his long arms and a stubbly goatee, he's a somewhat intimidating figure. He played basketball for two years at Penn State-Mont Alto and was named all-league before transferring to University Park.

This summer, Penn State sophomore Casie Goshow proved she had what it takes to be brave as she danced on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and entered the Adidas Makes Tracks Contest.
