Event begins movin' along
Movin' On, an annual spring concert sponsored by UPAC, will begin booking bands earlier for this year's event.

Because Movin' On has received its allocation from the University Park Allocations Committee (UPAC) much earlier than in previous years, it will be able to start making offers to bands earlier.

In the past, Movin' On has not received its UPAC allocation, which provides the majority of the funding for the six-figure event, until the spring semester. But this year, the allocation, about $60,000, was confirmed last Friday.

Jameela Truman, director of Movin' On, said she received the allocation faster this year because she turned in a funding request at the beginning of November, well in advance of the final February deadline.

With financing confirmed, Truman said she can now begin sending out offers to bands. She said she still has to wait for bands to set their tour schedules before dates could be confirmed, but earlier offers might increase the chance that the bands can hold the Movin' On date in their schedule.

Movin' On is tentatively scheduled to be held April 28, but the date has not been confirmed by Penn State Events Management

yet. The final band lineup will be announced sometime this spring once all the contracts are signed, Truman said.

Truman said she would be looking to recruit bands from a number of different genres, including punk, rock, ska and hip hop. She said she had a few major artists in mind, but she did not want to release any names before they were confirmed.

Movin' On is organized by the Association of Residence Hall Students (ARHS).

ARHS president Mark Taticchi said this year's UPAC allocation to Movin' On is "almost everything that we asked for."

Truman said this year's UPAC allocation is a little less than last year's allocation, but the difference is probably because Movin' On implemented a number of cost-saving measures for this year's event, such as reducing the number of vehicles used and getting rid of inflatable structures.

"We cut back a lot on the budget for stuff I think we could do without," she said.

Truman said she anticipates overall spending to be similar to last year's amount and said she is still looking for more sponsors.

"The resources are there," she said. "We just have to look into them."

ARHS allocated an additional $10,000 to Movin' On earlier this week.

Taticchi said the amount is fairly constant from year to year. However, because of changes in ARHS fundraising policies, last week Taticchi proposed reducing the amount ARHS would allocate to the event.

ARHS members decided to keep the full allocation. In exchange, ARHS will have significantly less money to spend on other programming next semester.

"Funding sources in general at the university are tightening," Taticchi said. "It is a factor that we have to keep in mind when we are considering funding everything we do."
