'Five Guys' unveils alternative eatery

Collegian Staff Writer

State College was introduced to the new king in town yesterday -- the new "king of burgers" that is, as Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries was opened.

Located on 226 W. College Ave., Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries opened its doors to the public at 10 a.m.

Store manager Jeff Suhoney said despite the low amount of advertising and promotions, the store was visited by many residents in the area.

"We definitely exceeded expectations," Suhoney said.

Suhoney said that Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries is a good addition to the State College restaurant scene.

"We just wanted to offer State College something they don't have," Suhoney said. "We are the new king of burgers. It is just all about a fun, clean, cool atmosphere."

Open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m., customers are welcomed into Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries with their upbeat music, friendly staff and large view of the kitchen where customers can watch their meals being made in front of their very own eyes.

Suhoney, who has been in the restaurant business since he was 16, said the franchise prides itself on its freshness and quality of food.

"This is not fast food, it is quick casual," Suhoney said. "You can get some good burgers around here in fast food places, but everyone has a microwave and freezer. We have a cooler -- we don't freeze anything. It is all fresh everyday. Our food speaks for itself."

Kamaria Dudley (senior-animal science) said that she visited the restaurant because her friend had recommended the establishment.

"A nice burger joint in a college town is a good idea. There is a definite monetary gain and it is a nice change from the dorm food for college students," Dudley said. "This place is really good and I would come back."

Tom Haley, a State College resident, said he stumbled across Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries while walking around downtown and was eager to go in since he has tried their food in the Washington, D.C. area.

"This is fabulous food," Haley said. "It is the best hamburger around -- the best place around. [Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries] do what they do well, and there is always a place for that anywhere."

Ashley Weems (senior-integrative arts) said she also came to Five Guys Famous Burgers and Fries because she had tried it elsewhere.

"I love the quality of this place," Weems said. "It is so pleasant, and you can see them cooking in front of you with gloves on and everything. You feel very comfortable eating here. It is a nice change from the normal fast food places."
