NYT writer speaks about science in the news

Collegian Staff Writer

Science correspondent for the New York Times, Dennis Overbye, spoke this morning about science coverage in the news.

In his lecture, "Watching Scientists Watching Nature," Overbye put up overheads showing the audience the lack of scientific news on the front page from past years. He said Albert Einstein first appeared in the New York Times in 1917.

He also showed front pages from the years 1927, 1948, 1953 and 2000. In recent years, science has become a more important topic to cover, he said.

"Something has changed in the last half century," Overbye said. “Somewhere along the way, science became important for journalists to cover."

In addition to being a writer for The New York Times, Overbye has won many awards, including the American Institute of Physics Science Writing Award and the American Association for the Advancement of Science Journalism Award.
