With all that was made of Amber Harris this week, the girl opposite her in the post seemed to get lost in the mix. During her press conference on Wednesday, Penn State head coach Rene Portland lauded Xavier's freshman sensation.
Ideally, you get Harris to take herself out of the game.
"That would be the nicest thing they could do: get her in foul trouble," Portland said.
But the girl on the other end, Amanda Brown, can play some ball, too. She tied career highs with 29 points and 15 rebounds, her 12th career double-double, and led the Lady Lions to a 73-66 overtime win over Xavier last night in the Bryce Jordan Center.
"I found open spots and the guards gave me the ball," Brown said. "We were just working well together."
Brown was often spotted open in the paint with a lob entry pass. But when she didn't have the ball in her hands, Brown also clamped down on the defensive front. In conjunction with forwards Charity Renfro and Rashida Mark, Brown was effective in containing Harris, who had her worst offensive numbers of the season.
Harris was held to 10 points and nine rebounds. Coming into last night's game, however, Harris was averaging 16.6 points per game and was fourth in the nation in blocks per game (3.5). In fact, Harris had no points in the second half. Brown said Penn State (6-5) focused on keeping the athletic Harris contained.
Instead, the Musketeers relied on senior guard Suntana Granderson, who had a career-high 30 points for Xavier (6-3). Down the stretch in regulation, Granderson carried Xavier, which shot 50.9 percent from the field. She was crucial late and scored 19 points in the second half.
"I just basically went out there and played," Granderson said. "I didn't think I needed to pick up [for Harris], I just played my game."
To end regulation, Penn State got a little sloppy and allowed Xavier just enough room. Brown fumbled the ball in traffic at the top of the key and Joei Clyburn pulled the ball from the heap of bodies. She took it end-to-end for the easy lay up to tie the score, 62-62.
Penn State broke from a timeout with 17.9 seconds in the second half and tried to orchestrate a final shot attempt. The seconds ticked away and players struggled to find an open look.
But in overtime, the Lady Lions shot 60 percent -- they shot 37.7 percent on the game. Brown had three points in the extra frame, but with 1:16 left, it was Adrienne Squire who sealed the game. The junior guard nailed a three-pointer from the right wing side to put Penn State up, 71-64, and the crowd erupted.
"I was just wide open," Squire said. "I didn't really shoot very well this game, but I was just praying that it would go in. And it did, and it was a big three."
