Password security is vital
I don't know exactly what has been going on around campus this year; as far as ITS requesting students to update their passwords, but from Joseph Kolligian's letter ("Student reader vents on new password regulation," Dec. 7). I am inferring this much: ITS has put out a push for students (maybe even mandated) to change their passwords, and narrow-minded and foolish students are squawking about it. Let me say this: Shut up, you fools. The university operates one network. So that means when you use your user ID and shoddy password to log in to Pollock lab to play with Myspace.com, you are also on the same network that sends UTS e-mails with grades, provides remote access to research servers in labs and stores your Bursar information. In other words, everything from your meal plan to your test scores are on the network. If you don't care about who sees your stupid e-mail to your girlfriend back home, that's fine. But don't compromise the security of OPP staff and custodians whose personal records may be at risk due to your negligence. Josh Rex
