HUB to incorporate new dining options

Collegian Staff Writer

When students return for the spring semester, the HUB-Robeson Center's dining area will look a little different and include a few more corporate labels.

The area of the Union Street Burger Co. will be renovated to include Nathan's Hot Dogs, Kenny Rogers and Arthur Treacher franchises. Items on the Union Street Burger Co.'s menu will still be available after renovation.

"When we expanded seven years ago, we didn't do much with [the Union Street Burger Co.]," assistant director of Food Services David Gingher said. "So now we have decided to make some upgrades to the unit, and we wanted to bring in another brand."

Arthur Treacher specializes in fish products, including a fish sandwich, fish and fries platters, shrimp and clams, Gingher said.

Operations manager Vincent Rocco said Kenny Rogers, a chicken franchise, will only be open on Saturdays and therefore, it won't compete with Chick-fil-A, which is closed on weekends.

Gingher said the location will continue to serve breakfast.

In addition to the expanded menu, the unit will also have an updated look.

The Union Street Burger Co. closed Nov. 19 to begin construction. Gingher said they could not normally afford to close the operation, but the timing worked well because sales typically drop between Thanksgiving break and the beginning of the spring semester.

He said the goal is to reopen the renovated unit for the week of Jan. 8, and he expects to be in full swing by the start of classes on Jan. 16.

The changes will not affect student employment, he said.

Rocco said assistant manager of Retail Food Operations David Meder is currently in New York for a three-

week training period because national chains hold strict standards for each franchise.

"Everything is black and white, just like a Starbucks or McDonald's," Rocco said.

He said one of the renovation's goals was to improve late-night options. The HUB currently provides a Nathan's Hot Dog cart, along with popcorn, pretzel, cookie and smoothie carts on main walkways during weekend nights.

"Student groups are starting to give us feedback on the late-night programs," he said. "We want to improve them, but it is not to go after Canyon Pizza."

Rocco said some highlights of the new menu include lemonade, crinkle-cut fries and a traditional Coney Island hot dog.

"It is perfect for the college campus because it's grab-and-go," Randy Watts, vice president of Nathan's franchise operations, said. "We are currently on 170 campuses."

The department is also considering holding eating contests like Nathan's famous annual Fourth of July competition.

"We have a lot of ideas," he said. "We might break it down with greeks and independents, or hold the finals at a sporting event."
