[ Updated Wednesday, Dec. 06, 2006 ]

Gov. Ed Rendell has begun soliciting interest for the privatization of the Pennsylvania Turnpike - and students could be paying tolls to someone other than the state.

Following a five-hour preliminary hearing today, the attorney for Anthony Torsell, a Penn State student accused of hitting two men while driving under the influence, said the evidence against his client is overwhelming.

Almost one-third of all employees called out of work sick in the last year when they were healthy, a recent study reported.

The U.S. House and Senate may become a deeper shade of green, according to some environmentalists.

Cyclists may soon be able to ride through more of the State College area on paved bike trails.

For those interested in exploring The Best Places You've Never Seen, or discovering what the meaning is of This Is Penn State, look no further.

Penn State students now have another option when it comes to fitness facilities.

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) held its last meeting of the semester last night, but the way the members acted, there wasn't anything final about it.

According to one Penn State professor, if automobile carbon dioxide emissions were measured in horse droppings, Americans would be able to cover every road in the United States with an inch of droppings every year.

More details from a police investigation are expected to be released today at the preliminary hearing of a Penn State student accused of hitting two men in October while driving under the influence.

A former Penn State student expected to return to University Park in the spring semester was shot and killed by his father, who then turned the gun on himself, last Thursday in Montgomery County, police said.

Penn State is reporting a 12 percent increase in undergraduate applications from this time last year, but Penn State president Graham Spanier said the university's goal is to stay at the "enrollment ceiling" of about 42,000 students.

Despite police saying she fled the scene, Katherine Applegate, the former student accused of driving under the influence and hitting a Penn State freshman Saturday, was going to return to the crash site, her attorney said yesterday.

SPORTS

Don't expect to hear Whitney Houston singing the national anthem accompanied by a military fly-over anytime soon before a Penn State basketball game.

It's a Friday afternoon in the South Gym of Rec Hall, and the Penn State men's volleyball team is trying to squeeze a match into its one-hour practice session. At face value, the team doesn't look too different from last year, with seniors Alex Gutor, Ryan Walthall and sophomore Max Holt in attendance.

As history shows, it's no small wonder that the Lady Lions won on Sunday. The team has enjoyed a good deal of success in its 12 seasons at the Bryce Jordan Center and came into the game against Old Dominion 3-0 at home, riding a high after an undefeated start.
