Letter to the Editor
Failing grade to Collegian for errors, opinion piece

Failing grade to the Collegian for being wholly incapable of publishing a worthwhile daily news source.

After misspelling fraternity with an "m," (News in Brief, Dec. 4), misquoting the lyrics of a traditional Christmas tune ("Sincerest apologies for December and finals-related stress," Dec. 4) and misattributing the winning score to the 0-6 Morgan State men's basketball team ("Lions play down to the Bears," Dec. 4), I'm surprised the Collegian even spells its own name correctly.

However, what I find more disheartening is the Board of Opinion's lackluster plea to the community to prevent drunk driving. I'm happy to see they mentioned the idea of increased police effort. But I don't understand why, after two serious incidents this semester, the police shouldn't be setting up checkpoints on all the major roads on weekends.

Driving is not a right - it is a privilege and a responsibility. Drivers need to be held accountable for their poor decisions before an unfortunate accident occurs. We can't sit around and wait for tragedies to shake people up to make better decisions.

And failing grade also to Lana Ulrich for further diminishing issues of personal responsibility ("'Bong Hits 4 Jesus' could become historic legal precedent," Dec. 4). A senior high school student broke a school rule at a public school sanctioned event. Guess what happens. He gets in trouble.

Issues of free speech aside, this student and his pot-smoking admirers need to accept that while a public education is a right, it is not a right to break all the rules set forth to ensure a reasonable environment for education.

It's time people started taking personal responsibility for their own actions. If you get drunk and knock your own teeth out, then you have to accept the consequences.
