However, vocalist and guitarist Timothy Lannen of The Diggs said that each song is its own unique experience.
"As far as genre, it's kind of a '90s throwback, but we treat each song differently. It's more song-oriented instead of one kind of sound," he said. "We're indie. We're not emo. Maybe we are in a couple of songs, but some people say we're emo, and I think that's weird."
The Diggs released its full-length debut, Commute, last year.
The band is currently about halfway through the completion of its new album, which Lannen describes as a continuation of their debut album.
"[The music on] Commute is a huge part of our sound, but we love exploring differing kinds of music. We want to keep it interesting for ourselves," he said.
The Diggs are not the only ones striving for exciting music.
The Disconnect is a four-member instrumental indie rock band from Allentown.
"In the beginning, we tossed around the idea of finding a singer, but nothing ever felt right. Then we got comments from people saying, 'Don't ever ruin this with a singer.' We still think about it, we still mess around with the idea -- but everything is working out. Why change it?" guitarist Eric Shirk (senior-journalism and communication arts and sciences) said.
This will be the band's second performance in State College.
Its first gig came with a few mishaps.
Complications caused the other two bands slated to perform to drop out of the show, but the show went on.
"It still went really well," Shirk said. "There were about 40 kids there."
The Disconnect has only been together for a little more than a year. Shirk said the band's current MySpace page has contributed as a useful promotion tool, especially because of The Disconnect's limited touring base.
Although The Disconnect has had little exposure, Zack Pierpoint (freshman-physics) said he was intrigued to hear the band.
"I would definitely be interested in that kind of rock band," he said.
Shirk said melodies are the most important part of the band's sound.
"If they like Explosions in the Sky or Appleseed Cast, they'll probably like us," he said.
Both bands said they are looking forward to tonight's show.
Lannen said the band always has good touring experiences.
"We're a phenomenal live act. Even if you're not into our music, you'll love the show," he said.
