Lions hold off Morgan State

Collegian Staff Writer

Jamelle Cornley scored 18 points and Mike Walker added 16 for the Penn State men’s basketball team as it held off winless Morgan State, 80-71, today at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Brandon Hassell finished with 14 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and Geary Claxton scored 13 of his season-high 15 points in the second half to help the Nittany Lions (5-2) prevent the upset.

The Mid-Eastern Athletic conference Bears (0-6) kept the game close in the first half led by Joseph McLean, who had 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Penn State (5-2) began the game 12-for-31, but still led 33-30 at the half.

Cornley began the second half with back-to-back baskets to give Penn State a 37-32 lead. But the Bears scored on the ensuing possession and were down just four until consecutive scores by Cornley and Claxton put Penn State up 60-52 with 5:51 remaining.

Two minutes later, Mike Walker hit a 3-pointer, his third of the game, to extend the Lions lead to 10. Claxton then made a pair of free throws and subsequently scored on a fast break lay-in to put Penn State ahead, 70-59, the Lions’ largest lead of the game.

Senior guard Ben Luber left the game early in the second half after being elbowed in the face and did not return. After the game, Penn State coach Ed DeChellis said Luber was experiencing a "bad headache" and would be reevaluated later tonight or tomorrow morning.
