Campuses make progress on 'mini-thons'

Events benefiting the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance MarathonCommonwealth campuses have still been successful, despite new regulations from the Thon overall committee.

At the Council of Commonwealth Student Governments (CCSG) last month, many campus representatives said they were worried that the new regulations would diminish the effectiveness of their events, formerly called "mini-thons," which help raise money and awareness for Thon.

The new regulations included increased safety measures and a requirement to register events in Thon's online database. Also, the term "mini-thon" will be phased out because it conflicts with the name of the small scale dance marathons held at high schools and middle schools.

Penn State Erie and Penn State York have each held events this year, Jennifer Watkavitch, CCSG assistant Thon director said. She said both events complied with the new regulations, although Penn State Erie's event was still called a mini-thon because marketing had already begun when the new regulations were put in place.

"Everything's on schedule," Watkavitch said. "All of the feedback we've been getting has been very positive."

Watkavitch said CCSG Thon committee representatives were working with the Thon overall committee to develop guidelines for future events.
