Hoping to halt the skid on road

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State women's basketball team will attempt to rebound after losing three straight games over last weekend's break.

The Lady Lions (4-3) continue their road swing and tip off against Saint Francis (Pa.) at 7 tonight in Loretto.

The Red Flash (1-3), on the other hand, will be making their first home appearance this season.

And this one appears to be a game that the Lady Lions desperately need to win after enduring disappointments against No. 5 Duke, No. 18 Rutgers and Western Kentucky.

Against the Blue Devils, Penn State shot a dismal 30 percent from the field and committed a season-high 23 turnovers.

Against Rutgers it was more of the same as the Lady Lions struggled to sink shots, hitting only 31.4 percent of their attempts.

Though team shooting improved against Western Kentucky (39.5 percent), Penn State was 0-for-8 from behind the arc and only managed to control a season-low 25 rebounds, lowlighted by a particularly weak 17-rebound effort on the defensive glass.

Due to the recent woes, Penn State women's basketball head coach Rene Portland decided to shake up the starting roster and plans to stick with this one for quite some time, she told the Penn State Radio Network.

Stalwart sophomore point guard Brianne O'Rourke, who started every game since becoming a Lady Lion, was relegated to the bench in favor of sophomore Mashea Williams.

And even co-captain Kam Gissendanner, who also started all 29 games last season, was on the bench for the tip off against Western Kentucky. Freshman guard Tyra Grant, whose peppy play has given the Lady Lions an energetic boost, replaced her on Saturday.

Although things seem a bit askew right now for the Lady Lions, Saint Francis might be the perfect team to help them regain a bit of footing.

Penn State is 5-0 all-time against the Red Flash, including an 89-43 win last season. Against Northeast Conference teams, Penn State is 8-0.

Plus, Saint Francis is giving up an average of 70.5 points and is only scoring 60.8 points per game.

Though Lady Lions aren't scoring at an astronomical rate, averaging 62.6 points, they are holding their opponents to 58.4 points per game.
