Former PSU 'king' coaches on MTV's 'Made'

Collegian Staff Writer

All former USG President Ian Rosenberger had to work with as a recent MTV Made coach was an "eccentric loner" with hopes of winning a crown.

Rosenberger coached Brandin Fennessy, a high school senior, to homecoming king status on the Made episode that aired last Monday.

The former Quigley Catholic High School homecoming king and 2003 Penn State homecoming king said coaching Fennessy was more rewarding than his years reigning as king.

"Being a coach was 10 times harder than being homecoming king," he said. "But it was definitely 10 times better to help Brandin become homecoming king."

Rosenberger was working for MTV when he was approached about being a Made coach four months ago, he said. He immediately accepted the offer.

In order to help Fennessy achieve his goal, Rosenberger had to spend day and night with him.

"I lived with the kid for six weeks," he said. "I went to school with him and hung out with him after school."

Fennessy was a typical high school student -- "a train wreck" -- Rosenberger said.

"Everybody goes through that time, everybody's been 'that kid,' " he said. "I think that's the cool thing about [Made]. Everybody knows what it feels like."

Rosenberger said Fennessy was no exception.

"He was a train wreck, but a happy, amazing train wreck," he said.

Rosenberger said the most important thing Fennessy learned from the experience was self-confidence.

"He won! I was real proud," Rosenberger said. "I kept trying to tell him it's not about winning, but about being confident."

Although Rosenberger is working toward an animal science degree from Penn State, he is currently pursuing a career in production.

Rosenberger was also a contestant on CBS's Survivor: Palau, where he finished third. Rosenberger said his reality TV career has been full of amazing experiences, especially his time with Fennessy.

"It was great to get the opportunity to make a difference in someone's life," he said. "I wish I had a life coach when I was in high school, because I too was a train wreck."

Fennessy could not be reached for contact by press time.
