Instead of sticking around in Lock Haven to celebrate Sunday's victories over Clarion, Pitt-Johnstown and No. 13 Edinboro at the Pennsylvania Duals, James Yonushonis, Phil Davis and head coach Troy Sunderland hopped on a plane and headed to Dallas.
Plans changed, however, as Davis, ranked No. 1 at 197 pounds, forfeited his match with No. 2-ranked Jerry Rinaldi of Cornell because he failed to make weight.
So last night, No. 3-ranked Yonushonis was the lone representative for the Penn State wrestling program at the National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic.
Competing in the 174-pound weight class against No. 2 Matt Herrington of Penn, the senior wrestler fell behind in the first period, 2-0, as Herrington scored a takedown. Herrington scored another point on an escape in the second period, pushing the score to 3-0.
After a slow start in the first period, Yonushonis got going in the second, scoring a takedown of his own bringing the score to 3-2.
In the third period, Yonushonis scored an escape to tie the score at 3-3. With less than a minute to go, Yonushonis managed to score a second takedown on Herrington to make the score 5-3 in the Penn State grapplers' favor.
Although Herrington gained another point for controlling riding time in the match, Yonushonis came out on top, winning the match and defeating the No.2-ranked wrestler, 5-4.
Davis, coming off a win Sunday over Jim Gibson of the Edinboro Fighting Scots, entered the All-Star match holding a 4-0 lead in the series with Rinaldi.
At a press conference earlier this season, Davis said he was looking forward to competing against the wrestler whom he relates to the most in grappling style.
The junior's most recent victory over Rinaldi came in the national semifinals last year as Davis went on to place No. 2 in the nation.
