After having five straight games on the road, the Penn State ACHA Division II Ice Lions had their first home game since October this past Friday.
The Ice Lions (6-2-1, 6-2-1 SECHL) had a big support system with their fans as they faced off against their biggest competitor, Stony Brook (11-1, 2-0 SECHL).
With a 5-2 victory, their fans weren't disappointed.
The Ice Lions had an early 2-0 lead with a goal 11 minutes into the game by freshman Colin Roth. He was assisted by senior Bryan Kemmerer. One minute later, senior Bobby Finney scored a goal, thanks to an assist by senior Dave Donatelli.
Stony Brook tied the Ice Lions in the beginning of the third period, but it wasn't enough.
Senior Eric Neufeld made the winning goal and ripped a slap shot against the Seawolves' goalie Drew Santora. Assisted by captain Adam Levine and Roth, Finney added another goal 10 minutes into the third period. Junior Mike Sulkes finished up the game with a goal with five minutes left and was assisted by Donatelli.
Ice Lion coach Pat Fung was pleased with the outcome of the game.
"We had great team defense and there was a great effort out of everyone on the team," he said.
Fung also liked that a huge opponent did not intimidate his offense.
"Every goal that was made was our result to crush their defense," he said. "Bobby Finney was our lead in scoring, and they showed that they are apparent to take on a challenge."
Goaltender Dan Koletsky had a solid performance throughout the game with 41 saves.
"Dan was definitely our rock to lean on," Fung said.
With only nine penalties called on the Ice Lions, Fung said this game showed that the Ice Lions have the ability to limit their penalties.
"We showed that we can stay aggressive and physical throughout the whole game and stay out of the penalty box," he said.
