Poetry event explores cultural identity

For the Collegian

At 8 p.m. yesterday in Heritage Hall, the Puerto Rican Student Association hosted their annual Cultural Night, featuring spoken poetry presentations from students and headlined by award winning poet Carlos Andrés Gómez.

With a backdrop inspired by the Nuyorican Poets Café, eight students shared poetry with the crowd. The theme for the night’s poetry was cultural identity and topics explored by student poets included being a Palestinian American, gay African American, or Puerto Rican.

The final artist was professional poet and actor Carlos Andrés Gómez. Gómez shared nine poems with the crowd, discussing such subjects as his experience as a social worker, his opinion of President Bush and his views on love and lust.
