David Ho, director of the Aaron Diamond AIDS Research Center and the Time Magazine 1996 Man of the Year, spoke to an audience of about 100 people in the Life Sciences building on Friday.
Ho spent the first half of his speech discussing the current state of the AIDS epidemic. He said that while it is now possible to keep a person with AIDS alive almost indefinitely with proper treatment, there is still no vaccine for the HIV virus on the horizon.
Ho also discussed the growing threat of the Avian flu, which has infected 239 humans so far. Ho said that within a few decades, the disease could become a pandemic.
