Winners of four of their last five games, the Penn State Lady Icers (6-6, 3-3 ECWHL) look to continue their winning ways this weekend.
The team will play two Southeast region opponents this weekend. Indiana University of Pennsylvania comes to Greenberg Ice Pavilion on Saturday night at 10:15 and then will go on the road to play Delaware Sunday afternoon at 1:15.
Head coach Michael Brinton does not expect a huge challenge from IUP, a team in its first year of ACHA competition.
"IUP is a start-up team," Brinton said. "I really don't expect much from them."
However, Delaware has started off 5-0 and should provide a challenge for the Lady Icers.
"They have played really well so far," Brinton said of Delaware. "I expect us to be able to play and beat this team, but we're going to have to play a really good game."
Adding to the challenge is that the team has to play Delaware on Sunday afternoon after playing the night before, something that the team has struggled with all season.
Brinton said he thinks the team has learned it has to maintain its intensity throughout the weekend, but that the outcome of the Delaware game depends on which Lady Icers team shows up.
"If we decide to go into Delaware and just play the game where we're going through the motions like we've done a few other Sunday games we're gonna be in trouble," he said.
The team only played once last weekend, as they soundly defeated the University of Virginia, 7-0.
"I thought we played pretty well," Brinton said. "We pretty much dominated play from the second the game started."
The Virginia game was another solid performance for goaltender Gena Goldbaum, who recorded her first shutout of the season. On the offensive side, Alicia Lepore scored her team-leading 20th and 21st goals while Jess Waldron and Chelsea Sacks each added two goals, as well.
While the Virginia game did not give the Lady Icers a league win, it did give them their second win over Southeast region opponents. Although the team's standing in the Southeast region will not affect their chances of making the ECWHL playoffs, it greatly affects their chances of making the ACHA National Tournament.
With both games this weekend against Southeast opponents, the team has an excellent chance to bolster their standing with the first official rankings coming out for the first time this weekend. Brinton said he feels Penn State has been the best team in the Southeast so far.
The team also recently named its captains for the season. Defenseman Dana Voelker is the captain, while forwards Chelsea Sacks and Jess Waldron are the assistant captains.
