Weeden's column makes an unfounded comparison

I would like to first state that the death of Miami football player Bryan Pata is tragic, and no one could ever wish that upon another person, no matter what.

That having been said, Chris Weeden's column ("Pata's death tained by Miami stereotypes," Nov. 15) concerning Pata's death, University of Miami stereotypes and comparisons to Penn State is completely off base.

First of all, the only incidents in the past few years (since 2000 or so) where a player was convicted or admitted to wrongdoings were the arrow incident, Dan Connor's prank phone calls and Maurice Humphrey's DUI. In the past three years, the University of Miami participated in the Florida International brawl, the Peach Bowl brawl and the near-brawl during this season's Louisville game. Miami only suspended 13 players for their next game against then-winless Duke, and one player indefinitely. Florida International suspended 18 players indefinitely, including their next game at Alabama. Dan Connor sat on the bench for nearly four games last season, after doing community service. E.Z. Smith sat for even longer. Maurice Humphrey was kicked off the team when allegations were made.
