Recruit Brooks signs with men's basketball

The Penn State men's basketball team received a National Letter of Intent from 6-foot-8, 190-pound forward Jeff Brooks yesterday, the final day of the early singing period.

Brooks, a senior at Doss High School in Louisville, Ky., chose Penn State over Arkansas. He averaged just 11 points and 8 rebounds his junior season, but gained national attention during the summer when he was named MVP of the Blue-Chip Camp in Georgetown, Ky., and the Five-Star Camp in Pittsburgh. He's regarded as a contender for Kentucky's Mr. Basketball award this year.

Penn State assistant coach Kurt Kanaskie said that Penn State made home visits on the first day they were permitted as well as the last. Kanaskie also watched practice at Brooks' high school Tuesday.

Penn State now has no scholarship offers remaining. Talor Battle, a 5-foot-11, 160-pound point guard from Albany, N.Y. signed last Wednesday.

"We're thrilled. It's a great recruiting class. [Brooks] and Talor Battle give us two fast and athletic guys. They're both high-level guys. We feel very, very good about our recruiting class," Penn State head coach Ed DeChellis said.

Anticipated showers might affect parking

Penn State is alerting fans that there will likely be parking availability changes for the Penn State-Michigan State football game on Saturday, as a result of the rain expected in the Centre Region during the next two days.

More than two inches of rain is expected and will not have any effect on the game itself, which will kickoff at 12:00 p.m. in Beaver Stadium. Parking lots will open at 7 a.m. and stadium public gates will open at 10:30 a.m.

Grass fields used for parking near the stadium may be saturated from the rainfall, resulting in some reduction in parking in those lots. Fans driving to the game should allow extra time for arrival and be advised that they may be redirected away from their usual parking area.

Recreational vehicles that normally park in the Brown lot off Park Avenue and other lots may be directed to alternate parking on Saturday, according to Herb Schmidt, Penn State Associate Athletic Director.
