Letter to the Editor
Graphics aren't everything

Upon reading the "Dueling Game Consoles" article in Tuesday's newspaper, I was thoroughly disappointed with how the two consoles were compared to each other.

Throughout the article, Nintendo's Wii was repeatedly portrayed as inferior to Sony's PlayStation 3. Whether intentional or not, there appeared to be great bias toward the PS3, to the degree of neglecting vital information concerning the Wii.

What really struck me was Mr. Griffith's omission of the Wii's most unique feature, its unorthodox controller. Unlike any other controller before, the Wii Remote utilizes motion-sensing and infrared detection.

Instead of merely pressing a button to shoot a gun on the Wii, players actually aim the controller at their television as though they were using a gun. In games such as Tennis in Wii Sports, which comes bundled with the console, players swing the controller just as they would a racket.

The controller is one of Wii's key selling points. Also of interest to many people, and completely missing from the article, is the Virtual Console, which allows players to purchase and download classic games from past Nintendo consoles. Furthermore, the Wii is fully backward-compatible with Nintendo's previous console, the GameCube.

The PlayStation 3 is undoubtedly more powerful, but graphics alone do not make a console great. Nintendo took a chance with the Wii by breaking the current mold of videogame consoles. Is that not worth anything? Comparing physical capabilities alone is not a valid argument. I and many others look forward to enjoying the Wii this Sunday.
