UPUA to hold first official meeting Sunday

Collegian Staff Writer

One month since Jay Chamberlin was declared president of the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) -- and one month after UPUA's original drafters promised the organization would be up and running -- the group is ready to hold its first official meeting.

When Chamberlin was named president on Oct. 15, he said he hoped to have the organization filled and fully functional within a month.

Chamberlin said 26 of the 35 UPUA positions had been filled so far, leaving one Association of Residence Halls position, six academic colleges positions and two at-large positions still open.

UPUA will hold its first meeting 3 p.m. Sunday in the HUB-Robeson Center. Chamberlin said most of the meeting would consist of appointments to various UPUA positions. He said he had already assigned members and chairpersons to UPUA's committees, so the other representatives would just have to approve his selections. Future UPUA meetings will probably be on Sunday because most UPUA members do not have conflicts then, Chamberlin said. However, he said meetings would probably begin at 1 p.m. in the future.

Chamberlin said meetings would alternate each week between "general" and "work session" meetings. One of the general meetings each month would be a special town hall-style meeting where students can sign up to give presentations to the organization. However, an open student forum will also be held at the beginning of all general meetings.

"The town hall-style meeting is designed specifically to allow people to come in and express their opinions," he said.

Committees will meet during the work session meetings. Chamberlin said the meetings would probably be open to the public but he will have to speak with the committee chairpersons after they are appointed on Sunday. Chamberlin said he anticipates that most UPUA research and debate will take place during work sessions, with general meetings serving as a time to "report."

"Any kind of change we want to make on campus will be fully thought out and researched," he said. "It will be developed in a way that we know is feasible and that we know is accomplishable."

He said the distribution of student football tickets is the next issue on which he hopes to focus. He said he had a few ideas for changing the system, including allowing students to purchase tickets in class order, allowing students to purchase tickets on an individual level once the season tickets sell out and rewarding students who purchase tickets every year.

Chamberlin said he has already spoken with Vicky Triponey, vice president for student affairs, and Penn State President Graham Spanier and they seemed receptive to setting up discussions with athletics officials.

Chamberlin said he has already received a lot of applications for the two open at-large positions, but students could still e-mail him before tomorrow if they want to apply for the position. He said two applicants will be selected at Sunday's meeting.
