PHEAA ordered to disclose spending records

Collegian Staff Writer

A state court has ordered Pennsylvania's Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) to make available several financial records after it was found to be violating the state's Right-To-Know Law, according to the Associated Press.

The commonwealth court, in a 5-2 ruling, ordered PHEAA to make public spending records, including credit card charges and travel records of employees to resorts for board meetings.

PHEAA was also ordered to pay legal fees for several news outlets - the Associated Press, The Patriot-News of Harrisburg and Pittsburgh television station WTAE - after it took them to court over a request to keep the financial records in question private.

"PHEAA failed to comply with its duty and responsibility under the Right-to-Know Law," Judge Doris A. Smith-Ribner said. "The Right-to-Know Law favors public access regarding any expenditure of public funds."
